ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Commerce Engr. Khurram Dastgir Khan Wednesday said it was due to the efforts of Pakistan Embassy in Riyadh/Consulate in Jaddah that the legal status of more than 950,000 affected Pakistani workers had been regularized.
To a question, the Minister said the hard work of the government and the concerned Embassy must be appreciated.
He said the Prime Minister took keen interest in the issue and contacted the high-ups of the Saudi government to resolve the issue.
Khurram said legal status of the affected workers was regularized either by changing sponsorship or changing of their professions on their Iqamas in accordance with the amended labour laws.
He said the Embassy, despite resource constraints, had been able to regularize the highest number of foreign workers of any single foreign community as compared to other major manpower exporting countries in the Kingdom.
Replying to another question regarding the Pakistanis detained in Saudi jails, the Minister said all possible legal assistance would be provided to the detainees.APP (Associated Press of Pakistan)
