Riyadh: After failing to get pardon, Saudi prince Saud Bin Abdulaziz Bin Nasir al Saud, 34, a grandson of Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah through his mother convicted of murder likely to face execution, local media have reported.
Crown Prince Salman, Deputy Premier and Minister of Defence, reportedly said the prince would not be given special treatment after the victim’s father refused to pardon him and despite his royal position.
According to Arab News, Saudi Interior Minister Prince Muhammad bin Naif said that Shariah law would be applied to all without exception and there was not distinction between big and small, rich and poor.
The murder was occurred on February 2010 in London where the Saudi Prince had been declared guilty.
The victim, Abdullah Abdulaziz was a Saudi, was left with severe injuries including bite marks on both cheeks which prosecutors said showed a clear “sexual element” to the killing.
During the hearing in jury at London’s Old Bailey, also known as the Central Criminal Court Saud’s lawyers argued that he could face the death penalty in Saudi Arabia over the revelations of homosexuality aired at the trial — showed no emotion as the verdict was read out.
The prince had denied murder and a second charge of grievous bodily harm with intent in relation to an earlier alleged assault in a hotel lift that was captured on CCTV footage. He had admitted manslaughter.
Executions are common in the Kingdom, with beheading the most common method.
