Peshawar: Blockage of food supply through Lowari tunnel may result in famine like condition for the Chitral district residents. Short supply of edible food items, especially wheat this winter can affect the condition.
Announcement of National Highway Authority (NHA) to close down the tunnel would result in shortage of food supply to several parts. The tunnel would be open only twice a month for few hours. Transportation of food items in limited time space would result in problems to people.
Still, 4800 metric tones of wheat supply remains interrupted in the region, say the official figure.
Snowfall anytime can also block the way. Around 14,000 tones of wheat were to be supplied but still with the beginning of December, 4,800 tones supply remains unattended.
The supplied items might end up in a month only. Out of 2,100 metric tones food supply only 300 had been delivered.  Only in small quantity, pulses, sugar and ghee are available.
The unexpected and pre-announcement of the closure of the tunnel did not make much to the storage of food.
Sher Fayyaz Khan, the district food controller warned of uncontrollable situation with the unavailability of the food items in the markets.

The short-notice announcement has created a tensed situation among the food consumers and the suppliers. Had the NHA devised proper strategy, the present condition had not appeared. Snowfalls, blockage of tunnel are added miseries to the lives of Chitral people.
