BRISBANE: The first Ashes Test between Australia and England was stopped by rain for a second time on the fourth day in Brisbane on Sunday.

England were desperately holding on when rain hit the Gabba ground about an hour after a heavy hailstorm forced the players off.

At the time of the second interruption the tourists were 160 for eight in their second innings and consigned to defeat with another day left.

Joe Root was the last of the recognised batsmen at the crease and was 15 not out with Chris Tremlett on one.

Mitchell Johnson was the chief destroyer with four wickets for 40 off 18 overs. (AFP)
